Models and Types in Prophecy, Part 12
So, How Do You Find These Things?
I heard about a lot of these models listening to commentaries on totally different topics. The speaker went chasing down a rabbit trail and got around to talking about the model. To find others, you'll need an analytical frame of mind and the ability to recognize patterns.
Start by creating an outline of just the facts of the story you think might be a model for something else. Generalize the points if you can. Then consider if you've heard that story elsewhere with different names.
Do some research. Blue Letter Bible is an online search engine that has all kinds of nifty commentaries embedded in it. Look up a Bible verse and click the blue and white L next to it. That calls up a commentary list for that verse. They often come in text, audio, or video from a variety of speakers and writers.
Blue Letter Bible also has a Strong's Concordance buried in it. You have to do your look-up in KJV. The little numbers next to each word are links to the concordance's entry. You can learn all kinds of fascinating stuff about individual words from that. I used that function to help me understand part of the Akedah Yitzhak.
Don't be surprised if all the points don't match up. No model is a perfect match, but you should see a correlation of more points than not.
When you think you have a winner, check to make sure you aren't contorting the meaning of the text to make it fit. Either it will, or it won't.
Some Challenges for You
The Battle of Jericho mirrors part of Revelation
Enoch is a model for the Church
The Temple and the Tabernacle are models for humans
The Flood contains a model for two types of saints and those who perish in the Tribulation
Joshua, Adam, and Moses are all models for Christ
Conclusion
So, prophecies can be the usual prediction and fulfillment sort that we're used to, but there are models and types in Scripture that point us to interesting revelations as well.
Can you totally understand everything you need without ever finding the models? Sure. All you really need to know is plainly written in multiple places. Hunting for models can be a fun challenge, though.
[It is] the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings[is] to search out a matter. (Proverbs25:2)

Models and Types in Prophecy, Part 11
The Waters at Meribah: The Broken Model
Let's start by getting the story. Go to Exodus17: 1-7
Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped in Rephidim; but [there was] no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, "Give us water, that we may drink." So Moses said to them, "Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the LORD?" And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, "Why [is] it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!" And the LORD said to Moses, "Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?" (NKJV)
That's only half the story. Now, let's go take a look at the rest of it. Go toNumbers20:1-13
Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; and Miriam died there and was buried there. Now there was no water for the congregation; so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron. And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying: "If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! "Why have you brought up the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here? "And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It [is] not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor [is] there any water to drink." So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals." So Moses took the rod from before the LORD as He commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels!Must we bring water for you out of this rock?" Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank. Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."This [was] the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the LORD, and He was hallowed among them. (NKJV)
So, to recap, the first time, God told Moses to whack the rock with a rod and water fora couple million people and a bunch of cattle came spewing out of the rock. The second time, God told Moses to talk to the rock, but Moses was ticked off, so he whacked the rock again. Water came out, but God was not impressed.
We have some clues in other parts of the Bible to help us sort this model out. The first question is: who or what is the rock supposed to represent?
Go to 1Corinthians 10:1-5.
Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with most of them God was not well pleased, for [their bodies] were scattered in the wilderness. (NKJV)
Next question:Where do we get life-giving water?
Go to John4:5-10
Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Please give me a drink." He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?" Jesus replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water." (NLT)
So, the rock was Jesus. The first time He came, He was struck to provide us with the life-giving water. Now, all we have to do is ask.
Unfortunately,Moses broke the model when he smacked the rock the second time. For that, God forbid him to enter the Promised Land.

Models and Types in Prophecy, Part 10
Check out some ofthe ways that Isaac is a model for Jesus.
Isaac
Similarity
Jesus
Both parents were REALLY old
Miracle Baby
Born of a virgin by the power of the Spirit
Through this son would the Abrahamic Covenant be fulfilled. (Father of many nations, circumcision, blessing to all nations)
Promised Son
All over the OT prophets. Isaiah, Malachi, Daniel, etc.
Moriah is a ridge system
Sacrifice to take place on Moriah
Calvary is in the same place (2 Chronicles 3:1: Now Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where [the LORD] had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.)
Abraham and Isaac went together. The "together" in the Hebrew implies in unity or agreement.
In agreement
The plans for redemption were laid from the foundation of the world.
The angel declared that Isaac was Abraham's only son, denying Ishmael
Only Son
Jesus is the only Son of the Father
By God's command as a test of loyalty
Given as an Offering
To redeem the lost
3 days to the mountain. Technically, Abraham would have considered Isaac dead from the time the command came to sacrifice him.
3-day trip
Jesus was dead 3 days before resurrection
By provision of the ram, Isaac's life was restored to him.
Resurrection
Jesus was resurrected,
Although artwork usually shows Isaac as a kid, Jewish tradition says 37, but others say not quite that late but old enough to carry a stack of wood for the sacrifice. The Hebrew word translated "boy" or "lad" in verse 5 is often used of a guy up to 20 years old, but can also be used of servants or inferiors regardless of age, or for any unmarried man. Some commentators (eg: Chuck Smith) say 25-30.
Both adults (25+)
About 33 years old.
"God will provide himself a sacrifice." Further, if Isaac was to be the promised son through whom the covenant would be carried out, he had to live long enough to marry and have kids. If God wanted Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, God would have to resurrect Isaac.
Abraham also tells the servants that he and the lad will go worship and return. The way the text is structured implies WE will return. NKJV and NLT say "We" will return
Knew Resurrection was Coming
The plan was agreed upon from the foundation of the world
Isaac carried the wood for the sacrifice
Bearing Wood
Jesus carried a wooden cross (some say it was only the cross-beam, not the upright)
A 25-30 year old guy could have easily overpowered a 130 year old guy.
Could've gotten out of it.
Jesus could have called down 10,000 angels. 1 angel wiped out 185,000 Assyrians in one night. 10,000 angels? Wow...
Isaac disappears from the narrative until Eleazar brings back his bride.
Disappears until the bride comes
Disappears not long afterward while the Spirit is collecting His bride.

Models and Types in Prophecy, Part 9
TheAkedah Yitzhak
First, let's check out the story and a commentary on it.
Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."Then He said, "Take now your son, your only [son] Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you." So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid [it] on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said,"Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where [is] the lamb for a burnt offering?" And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb fora burnt offering." So the two of them went together. Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" So he said, "Here I am." And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only [son], from Me."Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind [him was] a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said [to] this day, "In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided." Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only [son]-- "blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which [is] on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.(Genesis22:1-19) (NKJV)
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten [son], of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called,"concluding that God [was] able to raise [him] up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. (Hebrews11:17-19) (NKJV)
Genesis22:2 is the first time the word "love"is used. It's used in reference to a father who has to sacrifice his only son. The Law of First Mention says that the first time a term is used, the context gives you a clue about the real importance of the word. Genesis22:5 is the first time the word "worship"is used. The Hebrew means to "bow down."
Abraham knew he was acting out prophecy. When Isaac asked about the offering, Abraham says that the "Lord will provide Himself a lamb for an offering." Some commentators take that to mean that God will Himself be the lamb, and that is what happened a few thousand years later. He named the place "In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen." Some translations say "provided."

Models and Types in Prophecy, Part 8
Step 7: Nissuin
Then, finally, the marriage occurred. The father of the groom declared that the house addition is ready, so the groom and several of his friends marched through the town of the bride with torches and trumpets. The groom's friends would shout out that the groom was coming. This was usually done at night without any warning. The bride was to expect the return of her groom at any time during the Eyrusin. Then the Huppah (bride's canopy) would be set up, the marriage finalized, and a 7-day party would begin.
"Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The five who were foolish didn't take enough olive oil for their lamps, but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. "At midnight they were roused by the shout, 'Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!'"All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps. Then the five foolish ones asked the others, 'Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.' "But the others replied, 'We don't have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.' "But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked. Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, 'Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!' "But he called back, 'Believe me, I don't know you!' "So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return. (Matthew25:1-13)
We have no idea when Jesus will return. Only the Father knows.
"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear. "However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.(Matthew24:32-36) (NLT)
In 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, we see a shout from an angel and atrumpet, and the bride with her bridesmaids will be gathered up and taken to the Marriage Feast of the Lamb.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. (1Thessalonians 4:16-17) (NLT)
"Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed [are] those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' " And he said to me, "These are the true sayings of God." (Revelation19:7-9) (NKJV)
So, if you take all the parts together and do a bit of hunting, you see how the model of the ancient Jewish marriage customs fit Christ and the Church. Nifty, huh?
